The Full Spectrum vs. Hemp Isolate Debate

One question that we are commonly asked is what the difference is between a “full spectrum hemp extract oil” versus a “hemp oil isolate or synthetic”. How do you know which type of product is better for you?
The primary difference between full spectrum hemp extract oil and hemp isolate is in the way the oil is extracted.
While a full spectrum hemp extract oil contains a wide range of cannabinoids and compounds found in the original hemp plant that it was extracted from, hemp isolates and synthetics isolate just one compound. An example of a hemp isolate is CBD oil isolate, which isolates the phytocompound cannabidiol, or CBD. CBD is the cannabinoid that’s widely associated with the amazing health benefits that have turned hemp into one of the most talked about and exciting natural health products to be become available to the public.
So doesn’t that mean that hemp isolates are better than full spectrum hemp extract oils?
Well, not necessarily. Full spectrum hemp extract oils contain not only cannabinoids such as CBD, but also many essential vitamins such as vitamin E, minerals such as potassium, magnesium, iron and zinc, omega-3 and -6, proteins, terpenes and flavonoids. Not to be overshadowed, terpenes alone have incredible potential for your health, as they have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and pain-relieving properties. Full spectrum is sometimes referred to as “whole plant,” meaning that the full plant extract is included, in the ratios and amounts that nature intended.

While there is still more research to be done, a growing majority believe that this combination of compounds from the whole plant produces a stronger result than any one of those components alone – a phenomenon that has been coined “the entourage effect”.
The rationale that underpins the advantages of taking full spectrum hemp extract oil versus hemp isolates is similar to the “whole foods movement” which suggests that processed foods are responsible for a lot of the negative health conditions that are on the rise, and that is largely accepted by the general public.
Another upside of full spectrum hemp extract oil is that isolates are often more expensive, as they undergo more extensive refinement and require more plant matter in order to get high levels of isolated CBD.
